As we begin the Spring quarter, the Daniels College of Business is excited to share some of the wonderful things happening at the College. This past quarter, Daniels invited McDonald's—one of the most savvy advertisers in the world—into the classroom to give students real-world insight into developing and delivering effective ad campaigns, which you can read about in this issue. Our alumni continue to be honored for their great work, as evidenced by Mike St. John (BSBA, 1981) and Meyer Saltzman (BAcc, 1958), who, at DU's Founder's Day, received the Randolph P. McDonough Award for Service to Alumni and the Community Service Award, respectively. This spring, Daniels and the DU Divisions of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences bring Dr. Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace International, to DU for a free event this April, and the University will launch its first TEDx conference in May. Read about other news and events in this issue of BizNotes.

When it comes to learning about advertising, Greg Wagner says there's no better way than engaging students in real-world, hands-on work. "I love doing this kind of thing because students realize what it's really like to work on ad campaigns," says Wagner, internship director and lecturer in the Department of Marketing and a 30-year veteran of advertising agencies D'Arcy and Leo Burnett. In quarters past, Wagner has invited Nestle-Purina, Altitude Network, Eldora Ski Resort and others to work with students in his undergraduate courses, Advertising Creative Strategy and Introduction to Advertising. In the Winter 2010 quarter, thanks to a connection of Dr. Dan Connolly, associate dean of undergraduate programs, he brought in McDonald's.

Step one of the project was a "client briefing" delivered to Wagner's students by seven McDonald's executives, including Paul Barrera, marketing manager and David Martinelli, public relations—both of whom are based out of the Greenwood Village office that covers the Rocky Mountain region—Tom Carlson, owner/operator of five McDonald's stores, and Cassidy Salomon of Moroch & Associates, McDonald's ad agency. Several weeks later, students presented strategy briefs to the same team—this time at McDonald's Greenwood Village office—for two target markets: moms and Hispanic families. more »
